Review: Lifetime 90023 Portable Basketball System

Lifetime Portable Basketball System

Are you looking for a basketball hoop for the home that gets all of the basics right? Do you want a system that will help to support at-home basketball practice and family fun, but won’t cost you a complete fortune? Then the Lifetime 90023 portable basketball system could be the right solution for you.

This portable basketball system features a 44-inch acrylic backboard that supports a standard rim and can be adjusted to various heights. The height adjustment mechanism does require a pole or broom in order to operate, so it isn’t as easy to use as other systems, but it can still be completed by just one person. It also features a 3-piece pole system, which is 3 inches in diameter, which gives players a relatively stable hoop to use for a quick pickup game in the driveway or street.

Just How Strong Is the Lifetime Portable Basketball System?

The first question that often comes to mind with a portable basketball system is this: can adults use the basketball hoop? In the instance, the answer is a definite “yes.” You won’t want to be dunking or hanging from the rim as an adult with this portable hoop, but it will let you have some driveway fun with the kids.

On a windy day, this portable basketball system could tip over. Even if you’re using a gel filler for the base, winds in the 40-50 mph range are likely to topple this hoop, especially if you have a small angle to your driveway. We would recommend that you bring the hoop into the garage or shed for storage until the heavy winds calm down.

Assembly of this portable basketball system is relatively easy and simple. We believe most people are going to be able to put this system together in under 2 hours.

What You Need to Know About this Lifetime Basketball Hoop

There are no springs that come with this rim. Even if you hear about kids dunking on this system safely, it should probably be discouraged. If you’ve got the base fully loaded – it can hold up to 300 pounds of sand – the rim will not likely support most kids and their desire to dunk. It’s really more of a shooting goal than anything else.

It’s also more of a light use basketball hoop that is a neighborhood play option more than a heavy use skills and shooting hoop. Younger kids are going to get a lot of action out of this system. Older kids may find it to be a little too basic when it comes time to be working on the game.

The hoop is held to the pole through a series of 4 pins and these do kind of work themselves loose over time, especially if you have kids that are playing fairly aggressively. We’d recommend checking on the pins on a regular basis to make sure everyone can play safely.

If you’re looking for a system that can provide you with a fair value, the Lifetime 90023 portable basketball system gets the job done. We loved it and think you will too.
